Catalysis and alternative fuels |
The provision of energy is a key issue at the heart of modern society: where do we get it from, how do we use it, and how much do we need? The development of alternative fuels via catalysis is an important aspect of this on-going discussion. Nature Energy welcomes submissions in this area in the form of original research Articles, Comments, Perspectives, and Reviews.

Gold-supported cerium-doped NiOx catalysts for water oxidation
The oxygen evolution reaction is essential to the sustainable production of hydrogen by water electrolysis. A gold-supported NiCeOx catalyst is now demonstrated to have high catalytic activity in alkaline media due to a combination of geometric and electronic effects.

The role of metal–organic frameworks in a carbon-neutral energy cycle
Metal-organic frameworks, which consist of porous networks of metal ions connected by organic linkers, are effective materials for the capture, storage and conversion of gaseous molecules. This Review examines their role in moving towards decarbonised energy systems, with a focus on applications related to hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide.

An operationally flexible fuel cell based on quaternary ammonium-biphosphate ion pairs
Fuel cells can deliver clean power but existing technologies can only operate under certain temperature and humidity regimes. Now, a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell based on quaternary ammonium-biphosphate ion pairs offers promising performance under a wider range of conditions than can be achieved with conventional fuel cells, increasing operational flexibility.
